At Lankan Filling Station, the chef O Tama Carey offers a menu of traditional Sri Lankan dishes, modified ever so slightly with modern touches. Cherry Point is a north Brooklyn tavern that has very good food and an adventurous, affordable drinks list, but is trying to stay low-key about it all. Yuksel Akdas, who runs this Turkish restaurant with his wife, Hadice Akdas, has been cooking since he was 9 years old, helping out at his family’s restaurant in Istanbul. Cosme Aguilar, the chef, has been frying, blending and stirring mole de Piaxtla and other traditional Mexican dishes since Casa Enrique opened in 2012.
In fact, he has barely changed his menu. Chefs from outside New York take turns in four- to six-month -long residencies. The ground crew in the kitchen and dining room is provided by Union Square Hospitality Group, with its usual competence and good cheer. The Olive Jar and Capitano have a lot in common.
Both restaurants are in Carlton, Melbourne’s historically Italian neighborhood.
